There is everything ambivalent in this music of androgyny: The great new influence was the poet Johann Mayrhofer, and many of the songs Schubert wrote in that March of were all to do with the world of the ancients as seen through Mayrhofer’s poems: E major emerges from within the piano’s rolling gestures “you quench my burning thirst” ; then, as the real action of the story begins to unfold and Ganymed begins his ascension, Schubert provides some bouncing eighth notes that gradually spin their way into F major and proceed sequentially within this final tonality.

This nit-picking between the philosophical influences on Goethe may not seem to make much difference to the song enthusiast, but it does confirm Schubert’s acuity in casting Ganymede as very much his own man, rather than a plaything of the god; the boy steers his music with plucky openness, and seems to make his own choice both to embrace and be embraced — ‘Umfangend umfangen!
