Recital Covent Garden In Goethe’s poem there is no question of a surprise attack and certainly no rapacious eagle. The poem was set to music by Franz Schubert and by Hugo Wolf. There is everything ambivalent in this music of androgyny: The great new influence was the poet Johann Mayrhofer, and many of the songs Schubert wrote in that March of were all to do with the world of the ancients as seen through Mayrhofer’s poems: E major emerges from within the piano’s rolling gestures “you quench my burning thirst” ; then, as the real action of the story begins to unfold and Ganymed begins his ascension, Schubert provides some bouncing eighth notes that gradually spin their way into F major and proceed sequentially within this final tonality.
